Friends of Chamber Music presents Shanghai Quartet and Wu Man, "A Night in Ancient and New China"

Renowned for its passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multicultural innovations, the Shanghai Quartet’s elegant style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire, allowing it to traverse musical genres including traditional Chinese folk music, masterpieces of Western music, and cutting-edge contemporary works.

The world’s premier pipa virtuoso, leading ambassador of Chinese music, and “the artist most responsible for bringing the pipa to the Western World” (LA Times), Wu Man has carved out a career which gives this ancient instrument a contemporary role in the music world.

“Brilliantly original and inarguably gorgeous.” The Washington Post

Program: “A Night in Ancient and New China”

Looking back to their roots, but with a contemporary vision, these artists will meld sounds of China with Western string quartet and pipa in an unforgettable evening of grand music. Exploring the great music of China, the program will feature a new multimedia work by the eminent Chinese composer Zhao Jiping (Raise the Red Lantern, Farewell My Concubine, To Live), along with a suite of traditional Chinese folk songs and more!
