Spring Dance Concert

Fridays, and Saturdays
May 6 - May 7, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Greenwood Performance Stage
This event is open to the public.

The Reed College Dance Department presents the 2016 Spring Dance Concert, featuring student created choreography as well as pieces developed in dance courses throughout the semester. Within classwork, the dancers of Dance 312 have had the opportunity to work with material by Trisha Brown, and collaborative intensively over an entire weekend with Kyle Abraham and members of his company, Abraham.In.Motion. This year’s spring concert will be held in Greenwood Performance Stage on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, at 7 pm.

Professor Minh Tran’s advanced contemporary technique course focuses on various elements of choreography. This semester’s students have explored these concepts through choreography created by Trisha Brown seminal work “Son of Gone Fishin’ ” (1981), which Minh Tran has staged on his students, and also worked collaboratively with the students focusing on the relations between them and variation as a process of development in Trisha Brown’s choreography. This class also had the opportunity to work with Kyle Abraham, who had a weeklong residency with Reed College. Over a weekend, the students of Dance 312 learned Abraham’s own material, his methodology, and also had the opportunity to create new movement inspired by Abraham’s work. In the spring concert, these students will present a work-in-progress showing which is the fruit of that weekend-long experience.

Professor Victoria Fortuna’s Community Dance and Collective Creation will present a work that is collaboratively developed by students and community members.   This work is a result from Fortuna and her students explore community dance as a mode of choreographic composition and social intervention based on principals of collective creation. Additionally, the Spring Dance Concert presents one piece choreographed by Reed Dance Troupe, a student organized extra-curricular dance group. This piece is completely choreographed, designed, and performed by Reed student dancers. Dance Troupe members meet for several hours each week throughout the semester to bring together their creative vision for the Spring Dance Concert.
